Yesterday I finished my reading of our foundational theory texts, Yosso's 2005 paper on Community Cultural Wealth, and Sewell's 1992 paper on Structure & Agency. We'll be citing these papers in our literature review, leaning on them to provide a framework through which to analyze other theoretical texts, and structuring the methods and goals of our research around the concepts discussed in them.

Yesterday I made short write-ups on both of them, included below.

Monday 29Jul19

Today from 8-10 am I read through those sub-pages and dedicated websites on the APS Bridge Programs at six different universities. I will meet with Dr. Cochran, Dr. Kaptan, and others at noon.

Dr. Corey Ptak mentioned "Cultural Capital" as an area of research for all members of the team. Dr. Geraldine Cochran presented in front of a research hub and others. They expressed enthusiasm for the project; one member has already done some research on grad programs through the lens of Cultural Capital and funds of knowledge. He has asked to sit in on a future meeting. Dr. Cochran warns that we not allow our focus to drift from Cultural Capital.

Timelines: All members of our team are to be given access to the University of Maryland's IRB for this project. A copy of the approval letter for another Bridge study Dr. Cochran was a part of. Our next meeting is billed for three weeks from now.

Our research drive's "Critical Frameworks" folder contains summaries on each framework through which we will be viewing our study. I don't have specific tasks for the next meeting since Dr. Cochran wants me to focus on my research at UT for the time being, except to make sure to upload my CITI certification paperwork to the IRB drive. There are enough reading materials on the frameworks we are using to keep me busy if I want more work.

Dr. Ptak has created a diagram that connects Structure & Agency with Cultural Capital & Community Cultural Wealth. Any given power structure creates and defines Cultural Capital. That capital acts as an intermediary, being seized by or given to groups of people; this may be an exclusionary loop, elevating values that are already held by a community. This capital grants them Agency which they may use to affect the Structure. There are other forms of Cultural Capital valued not by the system, but by the community, and this is where they derive their Culture Wealth.

I presented on existing APS Bridge Programs during our meeting from 1-2 pm EST. Dr. Cochran had a number of questions and corrections to the information.
